WCEPC Members to receive Heckerling Institute Update
 
On February 16, 2017, Attorney Catherine Priebe will present to the Council.  Attorney Priebe concentrates her practice in the areas of estate planning, business succession and fiduciary law with Certus Legal Group, Ltd. The presentation topic is the Heckerling Update.  As the premiere conference for estate planning professionals, the Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning provides unparalleled educational and professional development opportunities for all members of the estate planning team.  While not all of us can attend this week-long conference, we are fortunate to have a local attorney willing to share with our group the highlights of what is being discussed on a national level.

Non-Judicial Settlement Agreements--Jan. 19th Meeting Topic
This month's meeting will feature Attorney Caitlyn B. Sikorski on the topic of Non-Judicial Settlement Agreements for Trusts.  This area of practice should be of great interest to practitioners as we evaluate out of court resolution to disputes as well as the need for trust amendment.  Caitlyn B. Sikorski is a shareholder in Reinhart’s Trusts and Estates Practice where she focuses on litigation, including breach of trust, breach of fiduciary duty, undue influence, and significant construction and reformation matters. She represents individual and corporate fiduciaries, beneficiaries, and other parties involved in will, trust and intra-family related disputes and matters. Caitlyn is also experienced in prenuptial and marital property agreements, succession planning and guardianship as well as gift and generation-skipping tax issues and general estate, tax, and wealth transfer planning.

On October 15, 2015, the WCEPC welcomed Bryan Browning of Valuation Research Corp. On March 20, 2014, members and guests welcomed local attorney J. Gardner Govan of Godfrey & Kahn who shared with the group highlights from the 2014 Heckerling Institute Conference.  Members can reference his outline in once logged in on this page.

 

 

J. Gardner Govan is the former chair of Godfrey & Kahn’s Estate Planning Group in the Milwaukee office, where his practice is concentrated in the areas of estate planning, business succession planning, taxation and probate administration.

Gardner has been a frequent speaker to many lay and professional groups, including the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Bar Association, the Waukesha Estate Planning Council, the Estate Counselors Forum, Mid-Winter Estate Planning Clinic, the Milwaukee Estate Planning Council and the CLEW Tax Workshops.

Gardner received his preparatory school education at Phillips Academy and Swarthmore High School and received his undergraduate education at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School magna cum laude where he was selected to the Order of the Coif. Gardner has been named as a Wisconsin Super Lawyer since 2005 and has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 2006.

Gardner is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and is a Board member of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of the Wisconsin State Bar. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Bar Association and Mid-Winter Estate Planning Clinic.

Members Review Divorce Court Perspective on Inherited Assets

Attorneys Kate McChrystal and Peter Wyant shared their insight with members about how the divorce court might address inherited assets.  Topics included appreciation and income from inherited assets, maintenance, property division, tracing and mixing.  Marital property law ought to be on the forefront of every planners mind when helping clients plan.

Attorney McChrystal graduated cum laude from Marquette University Law School in 2010. During law school she interned for Judge Michael J. Dwyer in the Milwaukee County Circuit Court Family Division as well as clerked for a Wisconsin family law firm. Those experiences solidified her interest in family law, her sole area of practice.  

Prior to attending law school, Attorney McChrystal worked as a teacher educating children at preschool, grade school, and middle school levels. Her background working with children and her familiarity with the complicated issues surrounding children’s special education and developmental needs is an asset to any case involving children, but especially those with the potential for complex child custody issues.

Attorney McChrystal has also participated in the Marquette Small Claims Mediation Clinic and completed coursework in mediation, negotiation, and dispute resolution. Whether a client’s case trajectory is collaborative divorce, mediation, negotiation, or litigation, Attorney McChrystal believes that each client deserves a competent, creative advocate. The goal is to proceed through an action with class and efficiency. Peter Wyant is an attorney at Wyant Law Offices, S.C.  Peter focuses his practice on estate and wealth transfer planning, along with trust and estate administration.  He works with clients of all backgrounds to develop and implement the proper estate plan for each client’s unique situation.  Peter also advises clients on tax issues and Wisconsin's marital property law.
